Definition
Thin content is content that provides too little useful or page-specific information for the job a page is supposed to do. It is primarily a value and evidence problem, not a universal word-count problem. A short page can be sufficient, while a long page can still be thin if it says little that matters.
Why thin content matters in programmatic SEO
Programmatic templates can multiply a shallow source model very efficiently. If every row contains only an entity name and generic copy, hundreds of pages may look different in metadata while contributing almost no facts, constraints, proof, or decisions that belong specifically to the page.
Thinness also interacts with other page-family risks. A page may be both thin and near-duplicate, or it may be concise but genuinely useful because the search task requires only a small amount of precise information. Length alone cannot make that distinction.
A simple example
A location page changes the city name but provides no local availability, regulations, pricing inputs, coverage, proof, or other facts. Adding several generic paragraphs about the service can increase the word count without improving the answer for a visitor in that city.
By contrast, a concise compatibility page that clearly states whether two products work together, the supported versions, one important limitation, and the exact next step may be short while still satisfying the searcher's task.
